Ali Akbar Khan - EALP 1319

Ali Akbar Khan (Bengali: আলী আকবর খাঁ) (14 April 1922 – 18 June 2009), often referred to as Khansahib or by the title Ustad (master), was a Hindustani classical musician of the Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Khan was instrumental in popularizing Indian classical music in the West, both as a performer (often in conjunction with Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar), and as a teacher. He established a music school in Calcutta in 1956, and the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967, which is now located in San Rafael, California and has a branch in Basel, Switzerland. Khan also composed several classical ragas and film scores. He was a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Side One
  • Raaga- Medhavi - Short Alap And Bilampat Gat In Teen Taal

Raaga Medhavi is a compound Melody and of a recent origin although its features are verily according to Traditional modes. The Raaga is dedicated to the memory of Poet Rabindranath Tagore.

In this melody, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has elaborated the Raaga to some length and played a composition of slow tempo in a a sixteen beats rhythm, well known Teen Taal. The basic Raagas on which stand the structure of this melody are broadly Kalyan, Nat and Bilawal. It is melody of sharp notes with occasional augmentation of the 4th and flattening of the 7th.

In playing the Raaga, Khan Sahib has deliberately avoided all aspects of superficial beauty and has very successfully brought out the emotion of dignity and devotion. Medhavi stadns for Genius.

Shankar Ghosh's tabla accompaniment is accordingly very sober and restrained with an occasional flare of soloplaying to bring in variety.

Side Two
  • Raaga-Bairagi - Short Alap Gats In Taal Shashanka And Fast Gat In Teen Taal

Khan Sahib Has played Raaga Bairagi. This is a melody of the Bhairav Group though not of a distant origin. After a short alap, Khan Sahib has started a composition in a new rhythm conveived by Khan Sahib himself. He calls it Taal Shashanka a rhythm of five and a half beats. This is a trifle controversial, for, usually a rhythm is composed of time-units but not fractions thereof. But Ali Akbar Khan has very successfully brought in this innovation in the field of music maintaining a regular and uniform rhythm-form in which the time-units fraction has been assimilated with the whole rhythm in a natural lilt without any jerk or artificial make-ups.

The improvisations he has made speak of highly intellectual level of the artiste both from the point of view of rhythm and melody.

The Raaga has a pentationic scale without the 3rd and 6th. The 2nd and the 7th. are flat.
