Nina & Rajendra Mehta - Kaifi Azmi's Nazara - 6405 624 - (Condition 85-90%) - Cover Colour Photostate - LP Record

Thirty-eight years ago, this couple dared to challenge the convention of singing traditional ghazals by performing duets. Today, the talented duo has created an exclusive niche for themselves as India's first "singer couple". Rajendra and Nina Mehta, whom everybody knows as the endearing couple "next-door", is married to music and love composing and performing together.

ShaadiTimes caught up with this dynamic duo at their South-Mumbai residence.Rajendra Mehta takes us back to the year 1963, when he first met his wife Nina at a recording for All India Radio (AIR). "The first time I met Nina was at the All India Radio station in Mumbai. Her mentor, Ustad Hafiz Ahmad Khansaab had called me to lend my voice for a recording. I was working at a restaurant in suburban Mumbai then, and an opportunity such as this was a welcome change. I met Nina and something clicked between us.

Later, we met each other at a friend's party, which is where we professed our feelings for each other. I was very clear in my mind that we should embark on a relationship only if we wished to marry and she agreed. Though I knew she was the one for me, there were many disqualifications, if I may say so. I was a Punjabi, and that too someone working in a restaurant, while she was a Gujarati girl from a rich family. So, I left that job to join an electrical company and was also doing a few low-profile ghazal shows here and there. Before I knew what was happening I started receiving offers for ghazal programmes and for film music."It needed only one meeting with Rajendraji for Ninaji to realise that here was the man of her dreams. "He came across as a genuine, emotional and simple-hearted man who was also a brilliant singer. That was more than enough for me to fall in love with him." It was the same with Rajendraji. "There was definitely some chemistry between us the first time we met. Nina was a simple, yet talented girl and that is what attracted me towards her."After their engagement in 1966, the couple decided to sing together - a decision that met with a lot of opposition, initially. "Whenever you try something new and unconventional there is bound to be opposition," says Rajendraji. "A ghazal was never meant to be sung as a duet. I'm sure many at that time were thinking, 'yeh Punjabi ladka aur Gujarati ladki kya kar rahe hain?' (What is this Punjabi boy and Gujarati girl upto?) But after some time people began to accept us."On the personal front too, there was opposition, though of a different kind. Says Nina, "singing together does bring us closer as a couple, but at the same time it also leads to many arguments. When we got together I didn't know Urdu well. He saw to it that I got well versed in the language before I stepped on stage."Even their relationship faced opposition in the beginning. Remarks Ninaji, "I was from a typical Gujarati business family, which was difficult for his family to accept. At that time, inter-caste marriages were rare. He was a Punjabi, a non-vegetarian and above all, a singer, so things were bound to get complicated.""Her parents were worried because they thought I was a filmi guy. But later, they accepted me, and at a family wedding once, even introduced me as their would-be son-in-law!" Rajendraji remembers fondly. So after four years of courtship, the couple finally tied the knot in January 1967. "Ours was a simple court marriage because at that time my father-in-law was unwell. But the reception party at T.G. Pavilion in Mumbai was an elaborate affair. People from all walks of life including music director Kalyanji, playwright Dharamveer Bharati and singer Mukesh graced the occasion. We had no time for a honeymoon, we went straight to work the very next day," Rajendraji recalls.
