Todi is a morning Raga cast in the mood of sadness, is the interpretation of which the artiste begins with a short 'Alap' or invocation and then moves into the theme in a rhythm consisting of 12 equal beats known as 'Ektal'. After developing the basic structure of the "Raga" in this manner with the help of variations in slow movement, the artiste introduces a series of fascinating "Taan" patterns (quick movement form note to note) and then goes on to an improviesed composition in a faster tempo. This he renders in a rhythmic cycle of 16 beats known as "Teental" embellished by still faster and picturesque "Taan" Patterns by way of finale. |

The improvisation offered on this side is in semi-classical form rendered in the style of the artiste's native city of banaras. It symbolises the mood of impulsive light - heartedness and shifts from a merry lilt to a long drawn out wail and back again according to the changes in the artiste's won moods the performance is in a rhythm known as "Keharwa' consisting of eight beats divided into two equal groups. The refrains of the basic melody is skilfuly woven into the noes fo the higher octave around which the artiste goes on to build up embellishments in the lower octave with appropriate combination of notes from Ragas "Piloo" and Kafi" of which it is a mixture |
