The book is a serious study of post independent cinema created by some of the greatest filmmaker like satyajit Ray Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Govindan Arvindan, Mani Kaul, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Aparna Sen, Govind Nihalani etc., who invariably took inspiration from or drew upon literary works. A major thrust of the book is to see the works of the filmmakers featured here as negotiating with socio-political debates and dialogues like those pertainting to women' studies dalit studies, minorites, migration etc.
Vinod Das did his Post-graduation in English Literature from Lucknow University and has worked in various Government departments. A Short story writer and a poet, e has written extensively on art, cultuer cinema etc. and has translated stores of writers such as kafka, Kipling Beckett, Marquez etc.
