A Gulzar directed documentary on Amjad Ali Khan won Filmfare award in 1990. IN LP Record On side one I have played one of my father's favourite ragas, Bihag. The 'bhaav' of this raag is one of 'virah' - the bitter sweet pangs of separation. I hope i am able to convey to you the poignancy of its imagery in this version of Bihag. Its starts with a vilambit gat, a slow composition set to Tritaal, a 16 beat time cycle. This is followed by a composition in medium tempo (madhyalaya) that i have composed, basing it on the khayal technique,The fast composition or drut gat, is based entirely on the traditional technique of instrumental music. On Side two is Pilu. There is a short introduction in the traditional thumri style, followed by a medium - paced composition based on the same style. In the last five minutes, there is a dadra which has a lilting movement. Here I have tried to evoke the nuances and shades of the shringar rasa - the mood of love. | |
