Alpana Mukherjee  (March 14, 1934 – July 24, 2009) was a successful Bengali singer during the late 1940s and 1950s and onwards. Her most noted songs are 'Hatti Matim Tim','Chotto Pakhi Chandana'. ' and 'Ami Alpana Enke Jai'. At the age of 13, she was discovered by close friends of her father's (Gauri Prasanna Majumder and Rabin Chatterjee) and became very popular soon after. From then on she regularly sang with artists such as Utpala Sen, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay, Shyamal Mitra (with whom she dueted with on many an occasion), Manabendra Mukhopadhyay, Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay. On occasion she would sing with Lata Mangeshkar and was directed by Norah Jones' father Pandit Ravi Shankar along with Rabin Chatterjee, Nachiketa Ghosh, Sushil Majumdar and Ali Akbar Khan.She was best friend's with Sandhya Mukhopadhyay. Although Banerjee later gave up her music career to care for her children, she stayed in the public eye and occasionly performed again. She was often the guest of honour at Bengali Music functions, tv broadcasting, and on air radio shows. In all India Radio, Calcutta from the Ramyagiti program; she sung a few songs tuned by, Ali Akbar Khan who is an internationally famed Sarod player, who was based in U.S. She also toured around most of the North Indian Radio stations singing in chain programs with All India Radio. She was noted to have sung in all corners of West Bengal. As well as touring around West Bengal, she also extensively toured England.Including Durga Puja functions in places such as;Hampstead Town Hall,Belsize Park,King's Cross and she also sang in functions at Bradford, Leeds, Liverpool, Wolverhampton, West Ham, Seven Sisters, Finsbury Park, Islington and with other Bengali associations. She was also interviewed by BBC London on several occasions. Alpana Mukherjee is married to Sridhar Mukherji and currently resides in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. She and her husband got married in 1959 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She has two children and two grandchildren. Her daughter lives in Chelsea, London and her son in Mumbai, India.
