Ali Akbar Khan (Bengali: আলী আকবর খাঁ) (14 April 1922 – 18 June 2009), often referred to as Khansahib or by the title Ustad (master), was a Hindustani classical musician of the Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Khan was instrumental in popularizing Indian classical music in the West, both as a performer (often in conjunction with Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar), and as a teacher. He established a music school in Calcutta in 1956, and the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967, which is now located in San Rafael, California and has a branch in Basel, Switzerland. Khan also composed several classical ragas and film scores. He was a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Side One

  • Raga Des Malhar - Short Alap : Gat In Des Tala - Sttarkhani

Malhar is a raga of the rainy season. Des Malhar, critically judged, does not however fall in the category of ragas of this season. It is a melody of the khamach scale using the leading note sharp in ascent and flat in descent and an accidental flattened medicant which perhaps distinguishes the raga from pure Des and makes it suggestive of the rainy season.

Ali Akbar Khan has played a beautiful alap without getting into a fixed rhythm for about nine minutes and has then started composition in a sixteen beat rhythm called Sitar Khani which has four bars. The melody is a store of sweetness just as the rhythm is full of caresses. Towards the end, Khan Sabib has playfully indulged into an effect of 7/8 within the compass of his original rhythm-frame.

Side Two

  • Raga Nat Bhairav - Short Alap : Bilampat & Drut Gat In Teental

After having done a short elaboration of the melody - Nat Bhairav, the artiste has taken up a composition in slow sixteen beats rhythm. the beauty of this melody finds expression in the flat submediant which Khan Sahib has approached almost exhaustively from different angles. The attitude of calm composure with which the artiste has delineated the melody is overpowering. This treatment of the raga has enhanced the intellectual fervour inherent in it. The variations are highly artistic particularly where they manifest melodic and rhythmic interaction.

The composition starts in a slow tempo and wakes into a middle-fast one and then the whole thing merges into a fast composition in Teen-taal, that is a sixteen beats rhythm.

Shankar Ghosh on Tabla, has done justice to himself by playing soberly. He has shown his vertuosity when he just started by playing a series of variations at one stretch.
