Juthika Ray (Meera Bhajan) - N.16597
Juthika Roy (20 April 1920[1] – 5 February 2014) was a bhajan (devotional) singer from India. She had sung more than 200 Hindi and 100 Bengali songs in her four dacade long career. She recorded devotional songs for Hindi film industry also. She was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 1972. She was born in 1920 at Amta in then united Bengal’s Howrah district. She started singing at an early age. She recorded her first album in 1932 when she was only 12 years old. She sung many songs under music director and her mentor Kazi Nazrul Islam and Bengali music director Kamal Dasgupta. Her admirers included Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. [2] She died on 5 February 2014 in hospital at Kolkata after a prolonged illness at the age of 93. She used to live in her Shyampukur Street, Kolkata house with her sisters.
